Oh no...please don't think that when I said to "Tweet topically," I meant to talk insistently about yourself. Anything but.

The idea is to position yourself as an expert by sharing information such as blog posts, articles, etc (the majority of which are not your own) in your area of expertise. Make your stream a resource that people look to.

Engagement and personal discussion is a great place to expand into the diversity you suggest. I enjoy sailing and college football. While the majority of my tweets are related to marketing, copy writing and social media, I also enjoy sharing tweets or tweeting with others about sailing, my home town or my favorite college football team (to name a few).

It all depends on how you want to use Twitter. Your "topic" might be as simple as a friendly voice. Find others with similar interests and share/discuss.

The one thing you don't want to do is talk about yourself (other then the occasional comment). That is the quickest way to get lost in the noise.

Good stuff, would tend to agree with all of it with the exception of Topically.
Limiting yourself to only one subject matter becomes tiresome pretty rapidly especially if it's you your insistently talking about. People in theory have varied interests, hobbies and passions both in and outside of work. IMHO @twitter is a great place to discuss those and share in the interests of others you follow and their passions.
It also provides a great opportunity to learn about other things perhaps you don't know about that interest you. Additionally, it provides a forum in which to ask questions of those who you do follow who may know the answers.
Gaining followers is nice, but it doesn't necessarily improve the overall experience which is typically dictated by the user and whether they enjoy it or not.
